In God We Trust
Look at a quarter, these words you will see:
“In God we trust.”
Look at a dollar, again you will see:
“In God we trust.”
These words proclaim that our great nation
Puts its trust in God, the Lord of Creation;
Also the Pledge of this great land
Says that as a nation under God we stand.
“Our fathers’ God, to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing:
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.” (1)
Now there are those who do not want to see:
“In God we trust.”
They are offended whenever they see:
“In God we trust.”
They think that these words threaten liberty,
While it is God who really sets us free;
When the Constitution say freedom of religion,
They think that it means freedom from religion.
“Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay,
Thy word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.” (2)
Through many conflicts with shedding of blood,
Our nation’s leaders expressed faith in God;
In situations of peril and fright,
We’ve prayed for help to the God of All Might ;
And in the darkness of defeat and pain,
When morning came, we saw our flag again;
After the conflict, a time of victory,
We thanked the God who saved our liberty.
“O thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation,
Blessed with victory and peace, may the heaven rescued land
Praise the Power that made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” (3)
